How pay tables, variants and hold decisions work on Ontario casino sites
Reading a pay table before you stake
Open the information panel on the title and look for the payout on a full house and a flush first. In Jacks or Better, a 9/6 table pays nine coins for a full house and six for a flush on a one-coin bet. An 8/5 or 7/5 table lowers those lines. The royal flush line is often quoted on a five-coin bet; confirm whether a royal is paid only at maximum coins, because that rule changes the cost of playing for a royal.
Also note the denomination. A “25¢” machine still multiplies by coins played. If a royal requires five coins, you are staking five times the denomination each round. Set a session limit in dollars, not in hands, so the coin structure cannot hide the real cost.
Hold decisions and what they do not do
Hold strategy charts exist because some discards raise expected value relative to a given pay table. That is not the same as controlling the next card. The draw is random. A correct hold on a 9/6 Jacks or Better game still loses many individual hands. Treat strategy as a way to avoid obviously poor holds, not as a system that can force an outcome or recover a previous loss.
Wild-card variants change the ranking. In Deuces Wild, four deuces and five-of-a-kind occupy lines that do not exist in Jacks or Better. A hold that is sensible on one variant can be a mistake on another. If you switch titles, re-read the ranking list before the first stake.
Ontario practicalities
Licensed Ontario operators may offer video poker as RNG games only, or as studio titles. Identity checks, deposit limits and reality checks still apply. Bonus funds often contribute little or nothing toward wagering when you play table-style or video poker games — confirm the contribution percentage in the promotion terms before you mix bonus balance with these titles.
If the rules panel is missing, incomplete or written only as marketing copy, skip the game. You do not need a substitute title to “make up” a session. Video poker is entertainment with a house edge; stop when the budget you set is gone.
